Songwriter Series: Erika Sherger + Mike Herz

Erika Sherger is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Boonton Township. She has been writing music in one form or another since she was a child. Her voice is heartfelt with a gritty edge and her songs resonate with honesty.  Her musical style has been described as Americana, alt folk or folk rock and is musically reminiscent of stuff from the Laurel Canyon era. She released her first record, an eight song EP called Like Birds in spring of 2021, which included 8 songs she wrote during the Covid which were produced remotely during the pandemic lockdown.  Her second album, Bad Wolf (Release Date: March 24th, 2023) is a full-length 12 song album that was recorded in several places and features tracks by a few special guests well-known on the local scene.

NJ singer-songwriter Mike Herz will be releasing his fourth full length album on April 7th, 2023. This effort marks a return to Herz’s homespun DIY roots while simultaneously showcasing his evolution as a songwriter and producer. The album contains a diverse collection of material, with some sparse songs and others well saturated with sounds. Rich with lyrical themes of nostalgia and transformation, the record evokes the presence of a protagonist facing various fires and somehow walking out the other side with heightened perspective and, perhaps, a few battle scars. Mike Herz has built a following around the Northeast and beyond the old fashioned way: one new believer at a time. He’s cultivated an impressive catalog of songs over the years, from deeply personal narratives to impressionist inspired collages that somehow feel cohesive. Whether he is performing solo with simply a guitar or piano or fronting the indie rock band (Part-Time Custodian) his compelling vocals and inspired live shows are quite captivating.
